Holbrook Police Department Offers Tips for Crime Prevention Month

October is National Crime Prevention Month. It encourages the public to recognize and celebrate crime prevention in their community while raising awareness surrounding topics such as victimization, volunteerism and creating safer communities.

The National Crime Prevention Council designated the month for this cause in 1984 and considers it a time for the government, civic groups, schools, businesses and other groups to educate the public on crime prevention, display their achievements and create new partnerships.

The NCPC believes that people of all ages and positions can and should take individual actions to stop crime. A community can truly succeed with crime prevention by addressing the cause of the crime rather than the action itself and reducing the opportunity for crime to occur. Crime prevention action should be rooted in research, proven strategies and evaluation.

This year’s Crime Prevention Month themes are: Empowering Communities to Take A Bite Out Of Crime®, Crime Prevention at Home, No Place For Hate and Intellectual Property Theft.
